Important: You Can\’t Fly or Sail Directly to Komodo Island
Komodo National Park consists of three main islands — Komodo, Rinca, and Padar — none of which have airports or accommodation. All visitors first travel to Labuan Bajo, a harbour town on Flores Island, then continue into the park by speedboat or liveaboard. This guide covers getting to Labuan Bajo and what to do from there.
Option 1: Fly Bali to Labuan Bajo (Best for Most Travelers)
Direct flights from Bali\’s Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ) take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Multiple airlines cover this route daily including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air, Citilink, Wings Air, and AirAsia. This is by far the fastest and most practical option.
Prices
One-way fares start from around IDR 800,000 (~$50 USD) on budget carriers when booked ahead. Garuda Indonesia charges more but includes checked baggage. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead — the route is popular and flights fill up, especially December–January and July–August.
Booking Tips
- Morning flights preferred — afternoon flights are more prone to delays due to weather around Flores
- AirAsia and Wings Air are typically the cheapest on this route
- Luggage limit — some smaller aircraft on this route have lower baggage limits, especially Wings Air turboprops. Check before booking.
- Book return flight separately — don\’t leave Labuan Bajo return open, as flights get booked up

Option 2: Ferry Bali to Labuan Bajo (New December 2025)
Since December 2025, government-operated Pelni ferries (KM Binaiya and KM Tilongkabila) run directly from Bali to Labuan Bajo on scheduled dates. The journey takes 27–37 hours and tickets start from IDR 295,000 (~$18 USD) for economy class — making this by far the cheapest option. The ferry passes through stunning island scenery and is an adventure in itself.
This option suits travelers with plenty of time, those on a very tight budget, or anyone who wants to experience the Indonesian archipelago slowly. It is not for travelers who want efficiency — the ferry operates on a schedule that doesn\’t always align with tourist timing, and the crossing can be rough.

Option 3: Island Hop Bali → Lombok → Sumbawa → Labuan Bajo
The overland-and-ferry route is the most adventurous option — passing through Lombok, Sumbawa, and eventually reaching Flores. The route involves multiple ferry crossings and bus transfers and takes approximately 32+ hours over 2–3 days:
- Fast boat Bali → Lombok (Padang Bai to Lembar, ~4–6 hours public ferry or 2 hours fast boat)
- Bus Lombok → Sumbawa Besar (~4 hours including Kayangan–Poto Tano ferry)
- Bus Sumbawa → Bima/Sape (~5 hours)
- Ferry Sape → Labuan Bajo (~8–9 hours, overnight)
This route is for serious overland travelers only — it\’s long, logistically complex, and not significantly cheaper than flying when you factor in accommodation en route. The reward is seeing a slice of rural Indonesia most tourists never experience.

From Labuan Bajo: Getting into Komodo National Park
All tours and boat trips into Komodo National Park depart from Labuan Bajo Harbour. Options:
- Day trip speedboat: Covers Padar Island viewpoint, Komodo or Rinca Island (Komodo dragons), Pink Beach, Manta Point (seasonally). ~$50–100 USD per person on a shared boat. Book through your guesthouse or the harbour.
- Shared liveaboard (open trip): 2 nights / 3 days is the most popular format — covers more islands, better snorkeling, sunrise on Padar. From ~$215 USD per person including meals on a standard shared boat.

Best Time to Visit Komodo
- April–June: Best overall — dry season starting, calm seas, good visibility, fewer crowds than peak season
- July–August: Busiest — manta rays at Manta Point, good diving, but crowds and higher prices
- September–October: Quieter, still good conditions, best for budget travelers
- November–March: Wet season — rougher seas, some tours cancelled, lower prices
