Koh Mook is one of Thailand\’s best-kept secrets — a small island in the Trang archipelago with the famous Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot), crystal-clear water, and almost no mass tourism. Getting there from Kuala Lumpur requires going overland through Hat Yai to Trang, then by ferry. It\’s a multi-leg journey, but the reward is an island that still feels genuinely unspoiled.

The Route: KL → Hat Yai → Trang → Koh Mook
Step 1: KL to Hat Yai
From KL\’s Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), buses cross the Malaysian-Thai border at Bukit Kayu Hitam / Sadao and arrive at Hat Yai Bus Terminal in approximately 7–9 hours. Cost from ~$8–15 USD. Alternatively fly KL to Hat Yai on AirAsia in under 2 hours — often similarly priced and much faster.

Step 2: Hat Yai to Trang
From Hat Yai, take a bus or minivan west to Trang — approximately 1.5–2 hours, costing around 100–150 THB. Several operators run this route throughout the day. Trang is a pleasant southern Thai city and worth stopping for a meal — the morning dim sum scene near the clock tower is excellent.

Step 3: Trang to Koh Mook
Ferries to Koh Mook depart from Kuan Tung Ku Pier (also called Hat Yao Pier) in Trang province. Journey time is approximately 30–45 minutes. In high season, several departures run daily. What to Do on Koh Mook
Koh Mook\’s main attraction is Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot) — a sea cave you swim through in darkness for about 80 meters before emerging into a hidden lagoon with a white sand beach. The cave is accessible only by boat and only at low tide. Most resorts and tour operators on the island offer guided trips.
Beyond the cave, Koh Mook is about slowing down. Charlie Beach on the west coast has soft white sand and clear water ideal for snorkeling. The island has no ATM (bring cash from the mainland) and limited nightlife — which is exactly the point.
Where to Stay on Koh Mook
Accommodation is mostly simple bungalows and small guesthouses concentrated around Charlie Beach and Had Farang. There\’s no large resort development — this is part of the island\’s appeal. Book ahead in peak season (December–February) as options are limited.

Island Hopping: Koh Mook and the Trang Islands
Koh Mook is part of the Trang Islands cluster — one of Thailand\’s best island-hopping areas. From Koh Mook, longtail boats connect to:
- Koh Kradan: 15–20 minutes by longtail — arguably the most beautiful beach in the Trang group
- Koh Ngai: 30 minutes — excellent snorkeling, small and quiet
- Koh Libong: 20 minutes — largest Trang island, dugong spotting, very local feel

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Koh Mook worth visiting over more famous islands?
Yes — if you want something quieter and less developed than Koh Samui or Koh Lanta. Koh Mook is best for travelers who want beaches without beach clubs, and genuinely want to disconnect. The Emerald Cave alone is worth the detour.
Is there an ATM on Koh Mook?
No ATM on the island — bring sufficient cash in Thai baht from Hat Yai or Trang before you travel. Some resorts accept cards but don\’t rely on it.
Do I need a visa to enter Thailand from Malaysia?
Most nationalities receive a 30-day visa exemption on arrival. Check the Thai embassy website for your specific passport before traveling.
