Option 1: Laos–China Railway (Best — Fast and Cheap)
The high-speed Laos–China Railway runs between Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes at up to 160 km/h — through spectacular mountain terrain including 75 tunnels and 167 bridges. This is by far the best option for almost every traveler.

- Departures: Multiple daily — approximately 07:50, 10:30, 14:00, 17:35 from Luang Prabang (Luang Prabang station)

Option 2: Minibus (Budget, Slower)
Before the railway opened, minibuses were the standard option — a 6–7 hour journey through winding mountain roads. Most travel agents in Luang Prabang still sell minibus tickets for around $15–20 USD. The scenery is beautiful but the road is slow and the minibuses can be cramped. With the train available at a similar price, the minibus is hard to recommend unless you specifically want to stop at sights along the way (Phou Khoun junction, Kasi).

Vang Vieng: What to Do
Vang Vieng has transformed significantly since the days of its notorious \”happy pizza\” backpacker scene. The town is now a proper adventure tourism hub set against a dramatic backdrop of karst limestone mountains and the Nam Song River.
- Blue Lagoon 1, 2, 3, and 4: Natural swimming holes in turquoise water — most popular day trip from town. Rent a bicycle or take a tuk-tuk. Blue Lagoon 3 and 4 are less crowded and worth the extra distance.
- Kayaking and tubing: The Nam Song River tubing is now much calmer than its Wild West days — still fun, just with fewer bars floating in the river.
- Hot air balloon: One of the best views in Southeast Asia — Vang Vieng\’s karst landscape from the air is stunning. Book in advance (~$90–120 USD).

Onward from Vang Vieng
- Vang Vieng → Vientiane: Laos–China Railway, ~50 minutes, ~$10 USD. By far the best option.
- Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang: Return train, ~1h 20min.
- Vientiane → Bangkok: Overnight bus (~10 hours) or train via Nong Khai border crossing.
