Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang: Slow Boat and Flight Guide (2026)

Chiang Rai is the natural gateway to the Mekong slow boat — most travelers come here specifically to cross into Laos at Chiang Khong and begin the two-day river journey to Luang Prabang. This guide covers getting from Chiang Rai to the border, the crossing itself, and what to do when you arrive in Laos.

Step 1: Getting from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong is the Thai border town opposite Huay Xai in Laos — approximately 130 km from Chiang Rai, about 2 hours by bus or minivan.

By Bus (Cheapest)

Buses from Chiang Rai Bus Terminal (Terminal 1, near the clock tower) to Chiang Khong run throughout the morning. First departure approximately 07:30 — critical timing if you want to catch the same-day slow boat. Journey ~2 hours, ~80 THB. The old 06:30 departure no longer runs.

⚠️ The slow boat departs Huay Xai at approximately 11:00. To catch it same day, you must be on the 07:30 bus from Chiang Rai — border processing takes 1.5–2 hours. Many travelers choose to stay overnight in Chiang Khong to avoid the rush.

By Minivan (Faster)

Shared minivans from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong take ~1.5 hours and cost ~150–200 THB. They depart when full from near the bus terminal. Faster than the bus but less predictable departure times.

Tour Package from Chiang Rai (Recommended)

Several operators in Chiang Rai sell all-inclusive packages covering minivan to Chiang Khong, border crossing assistance, Laos visa processing, and slow boat ticket — approximately $40–50 USD per person. Much easier than doing each step independently, particularly for the border logistics. Book through your guesthouse or 12Go Asia.

Step 2: Crossing the Border at Chiang Khong / Huay Xai

  • Tuk-tuk to Thai immigration: From Chiang Khong town, ~50 THB
  • Thai exit immigration: Stamp out of Thailand
  • Shuttle bus across the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge: ~20 THB, runs continuously
  • Laos Visa on Arrival (at Huay Xai border): $40 USD — bring new, clean US dollar bills and one passport photo. Or pre-apply at laoevisa.gov.la for $35 USD (3 business days)
  • Pickup truck to slow boat pier: ~$1 USD, departs frequently

Total border processing time: approximately 1.5–2 hours if queues are normal. Allow more on busy days (particularly weekends and Thai public holidays).

Step 3: The Mekong Slow Boat to Luang Prabang

The slow boat departs Huay Xai at approximately 11:00 and arrives in Pakbeng around 17:00 (Day 1). Day 2 departs Pakbeng ~08:00 and arrives Luang Prabang ~16:30–17:00. Total: two days on the Mekong.

Public slow boat ticket: ~$23 USD / 500,000 LAK — buy at the pier in Huay Xai, cash only. Arrive by 10:30 for best seat selection — front of the boat is significantly quieter than near the engine.

Alternative: Fly Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang

Lao Airlines operates direct flights from Chiang Rai (CEI) to Luang Prabang (LPQ) — approximately 1 hour, several times weekly. Fares from ~$80–120 USD. A completely different experience from the slow boat but valid if time is the priority.

Overnight in Chiang Khong (Recommended)

Staying overnight in Chiang Khong before the slow boat removes all time pressure. The town sits on the Mekong with views of Laos across the water — a genuinely pleasant one-night stop with good riverside restaurants and guesthouses.
