Nong Khai to Vientiane: Border Crossing Guide (2026)

Nong Khai to Vientiane is the shortest international border crossing in mainland Southeast Asia — the two cities sit on opposite banks of the Mekong, just 25 km apart including the bridge crossing. This guide is for travelers already in Nong Khai (arriving from Bangkok by train or bus) who need to complete the crossing into Laos.

The Crossing: Step by Step

Step 1: Get to Thai Immigration (Nong Khai)

From Nong Khai train station or the town center, take a tuk-tuk to the Thai immigration checkpoint at the entrance to the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge — approximately 3 km from the station, ~$1–2 USD. The immigration office opens from 06:00 to 22:00.

Step 2: Cross the Friendship Bridge

After receiving your Thai exit stamp, take the shuttle bus across the 1.2 km bridge — approximately 15 THB (~$0.40 USD). You cannot walk across the bridge. The bus drops you at Thanaleng Immigration on the Laos side.

Step 3: Laos Entry at Thanaleng

At Thanaleng immigration:

  • Visa on Arrival: $40 USD — new US dollar bills only, one passport photo. Available for most nationalities at this crossing.
  • e-Visa: If you pre-applied at laoevisa.gov.la ($35 USD), present your approved e-Visa QR code at the counter — faster queue.
  • ASEAN citizens: Most ASEAN nationals enter Laos visa-free for 14–30 days depending on nationality.

ℹ️ The Thanaleng border has an unofficial \”overtime fee\” of $1–2 USD charged outside regular hours (before 08:00 and after 16:00) — this is normal and expected. Have small USD bills ready.

Step 4: Thanaleng to Vientiane City

Thanaleng is approximately 25 km east of Vientiane city center. Options:

  • Shared taxi: ~$5–8 USD per person. Most common option — wait at the taxi rank outside immigration for others heading to the city.
  • Tuk-tuk (private): ~$10–15 USD for the vehicle (~60,000–80,000 LAK). Negotiate before boarding.
  • Lao-China Railway: Thanaleng station is right at the border — you can take the high-speed train directly from Thanaleng into Vientiane (Khamsavath station) in ~15 minutes, from ~$2 USD. A genuinely convenient option that many travelers don\’t know about.
