Phuket to Koh Phi Phi is one of Thailand\’s most popular day trip and overnight routes — the iconic twin-peaked island just 48 km southeast of Phuket, accessible by speedboat in 45 minutes or ferry in 2 hours. Home to Maya Bay (from The Beach), dramatic limestone cliffs, and turquoise water, Phi Phi is best visited with at least one night to experience it after the day trippers leave. This guide covers every transport option, the key difference between Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, and what to expect in 2025.

Phi Phi Don vs Phi Phi Leh
- Phi Phi Don: The inhabited island — where all accommodation, restaurants, and nightlife are located. Ferries arrive here at Ton Sai Bay. This is where you stay.
- Phi Phi Leh: The uninhabited island — where Maya Bay is located. No accommodation allowed. Only accessible by day trip boat from Phi Phi Don or Phuket. Strict daily visitor quotas apply.
Getting from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi
Speedboat (Fastest — 45 minutes)
Multiple operators run speedboats from Rassada Port in Phuket to Ton Sai Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don. Journey time approximately 45 minutes. Departures mainly in the morning (08:00–09:30). Fares from ~800–1,000 THB (~$22–28 USD) one way. Operators include Andaman Wave Master, Phi Phi Cruiser, and several others.
Ferry (Most Comfortable — 2 hours)
The PP Ferry and Tigerline operate larger, more stable car ferries between Phuket (Rassada Port) and Phi Phi Don — approximately 2 hours. More comfortable in choppy seas than speedboats. Fares from ~400–600 THB (~$11–17 USD) one way. Two main daily departures: approximately 08:30 and 13:30 from Phuket.
From Ao Nang / Krabi (Alternative)
Speedboats and ferries also connect Ao Nang (Krabi) with Phi Phi Don — approximately 1.5 hours, fares from ~350–600 THB. If you\’re already in Krabi, this is a more convenient route than going via Phuket.

Maya Bay: What You Need to Know in 2025
Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh was closed from 2018 to 2022 to allow coral reef recovery after being severely damaged by mass tourism. It reopened with strict visitor controls:
- Daily visitor limit: Strictly enforced — boats queue and wait for their allotted time slot
- Swimming: Permitted in designated areas only — not in the main bay
- Entry fee: 400 THB per person (national marine park fee, collected at the bay)
- Snorkeling: Only in designated snorkeling zones around the island perimeter
- Overnight stay: No boats allowed to anchor overnight at Maya Bay
The coral reef has recovered significantly since reopening — the bay looks more like it did before The Beach film than it did in 2017. The visit is worth it but calibrate expectations: it\’s a small beach surrounded by cliffs, genuinely beautiful, but crowded from 10:00–15:00.
What to Do on Koh Phi Phi Don
- Maya Bay day trip: Book through any operator on the island — half-day speedboat tours from ~800 THB per person including park fee
- The Viewpoint: 30-minute steep climb from Ton Sai village to a hilltop with arguably the best view in southern Thailand — Phi Phi Don\’s twin bays with Phi Phi Leh in the background. Free, open dawn to dusk. Go at sunset.
- Monkey Beach: Small cove with resident macaques, accessible by longtail (100 THB return). Monkeys are aggressive around food — keep bags closed.
- Snorkeling: Excellent reefs around Phi Phi Leh, Bamboo Island, and Mosquito Island. Most day tours include snorkeling stops.
- Long Beach (Hat Yao): The best swimming beach on Phi Phi Don — 20 minutes by longtail from Ton Sai or a 20-minute walk through the jungle. Quieter than the main village area.
Where to Stay on Koh Phi Phi
- Ton Sai Bay area: Main village, most guesthouses, lively nightlife. Best for budget travelers and social scene.
- Long Beach (Hat Yao): Quieter, removed from village noise, beachfront bungalows. Best for couples and those wanting peace.
- Loh Dalum Bay (north side of the village isthmus): Calmer water than Ton Sai, sunset views, mid-range resorts.
