Hanoi to Cat Ba Island — the largest island in Ha Long Bay, with beaches, jungle trekking, and a relaxed backpacker scene — takes approximately 3.5–4.5 hours by bus and ferry. Cat Ba is a great alternative or add-on to a Ha Long Bay cruise. This guide covers all transfer options.

Option 1: Bus + Ferry Combo (Most Common)
Several operators (Hung Thanh, Cat Ba Express, and others) run combined bus + ferry transfers from Hanoi\’s Old Quarter direct to Cat Ba town — approximately 3.5–4.5 hours total, fares from ~200,000–300,000 VND (~$8–12 USD). The bus drives to Hai Phong, boards a ferry to Cat Ba Island, and drops you in Cat Ba town. A single ticket covers everything. Departs morning (usually 07:00–08:30) and sometimes afternoon. The most convenient option.

Option 2: Via Hai Phong (Independent)
Take a public bus from Hanoi to Hai Phong (~2 hours, ~80,000 VND), then a ferry from Ben Binh port to Cat Ba (~45 minutes, ~80,000–120,000 VND). Cheaper but more connections and more hassle. Only worth it if the combo buses are sold out.
ℹ️ Cat Ba Island is a great base for independent Ha Long Bay exploration — many guesthouses offer kayaking, boat tours to Lan Ha Bay (less crowded than the main Ha Long Bay), and day trips. Staying 2–3 nights on Cat Ba gives you a very different experience to a cruise.
