Option 1: Fly KL to Langkawi (Recommended)
AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines fly from KLIA2 or KLIA to Langkawi International Airport (LGK) — approximately 1 hour, fares from ~RM 80–200 (~$17–43 USD). Multiple daily departures. From Langkawi Airport, Grab or taxi to Pantai Cenang (~20 minutes, ~RM 20–30) or Kuah town (~25 minutes). AirAsia typically has the cheapest fares — book 2–4 weeks ahead. The obvious choice for most travelers.

Option 2: Train/Bus + Ferry via Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah
Take the ETS train from KL Sentral to Arau or Alor Setar (~5–6 hours, ~RM 50–80), then taxi/bus to Kuala Perlis (~30 minutes) or Kuala Kedah (~20 minutes), then Langkawi Ferry Lines ferry to Langkawi (~1.5 hours, ~RM 23–28 one way). Total approximately 7–8 hours. Only worth it if flights are very expensive or you want to explore the northwest coast of peninsular Malaysia en route. Kuala Kedah ferry is slightly more frequent; Kuala Perlis is the shorter crossing.
ℹ️ Langkawi is a duty-free island — alcohol, chocolate, and cigarettes are significantly cheaper than on the mainland. Stock up at the Kuah duty-free shops or airport on arrival. Pantai Cenang is the main tourist beach strip with most restaurants, bars, and watersports; Kuah town is the main commercial hub near the ferry terminal.
