Lombok is Bali\’s quieter neighbour — better surf, fewer tourists, and the looming presence of Mount Rinjani. Getting there from Bali is easy: a fast boat takes 2–3 hours, a public ferry takes 4–6 hours, or you can fly in under 45 minutes. Which option works depends on where you\’re staying in Bali and where you\’re heading on Lombok.

Option 1: Fast Boat (Most Popular)
Fast boats are the go-to choice for most travelers — they\’re quick, run directly to the Gili Islands en route, and depart from multiple points around Bali. The main departure harbours are:
- Padang Bai Harbour (East Bali): Most popular departure point. Direct to Gili Trawangan in ~1.5 hours, continuing to Gili Air and Bangsal Harbour (Lombok) in ~2 hours total. Around 10 operators daily. Fares from IDR 350,000–600,000 (~$20–40 USD).
- Sanur Harbour (South Bali): More convenient if staying in Seminyak, Canggu or Ubud. Journey to Gili Trawangan ~2 hours. Fares from IDR 450,000–650,000 (~$28–42 USD).
- Serangan Harbour (South Bali): Serves Ekajaya, Bluewater Express and Gili Getaway — larger, more stable vessels. ~3 hours to Gili Islands. Fares from $28–35 USD.
ℹ️ Most fast boats depart between 08:00–09:30. Book at least 1–2 days ahead in high season (July–August, December–January). Seas can be rough — bring motion sickness tablets if sensitive.

Option 2: Public Ferry (Budget)
The government-operated public ferry runs 24 hours a day, every hour or so, from Padang Bai Harbour to Lembar Harbour in West Lombok. Journey time is 4–6 hours. Tickets cost around IDR 50,000–60,000 (~$3–4 USD) per person — the cheapest way to cross by a significant margin.
The ferry is large and stable but slow. It\’s the best option if you\’re bringing a scooter or car across, or traveling on a very tight budget. Lembar Harbour is in West Lombok, about 1 hour from Mataram and 2.5 hours from Bangsal (for the Gili Islands).
Option 3: Fly (Fastest)
Domestic flights from Bali\’s Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) to Lombok International Airport (LOP) take approximately 30–45 minutes. Airlines include Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Citilink, and Wings Air. Prices start from around IDR 400,000–700,000 (~$25–45 USD) one way. Flying makes sense if you\’re heading to Kuta Lombok or South Lombok rather than the Gili Islands — the airport is much closer to those areas than Bangsal Harbour is.

Where to Stay on Lombok
- Senggigi: West coast resort town, convenient for day trips to Gili Islands from Bangsal. More developed, older tourist infrastructure.
- Kuta Lombok (South): Surf beaches, growing café scene, beautiful empty bays. Very different vibe to Kuta Bali.
- Tetebatu (Central): Rice fields, waterfalls, cool mountain air — good base for Rinjani treks.
- Near Bangsal: Stay in Tanjung for easy Gili Island access without staying on the islands themselves.
