The Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — are three small coral-fringed islands off the northwest coast of Lombok. No cars, no motorbikes, gin-clear water, and some of the best snorkeling in Indonesia. Getting there from Bali is straightforward: a fast boat from Padang Bai or Sanur takes 1.5–2.5 hours and drops you directly at the island of your choice. Here\’s everything you need to know, including which island suits you best.

Getting There: Fast Boat from Bali
Fast boats to the Gili Islands depart from three points in Bali:
From Padang Bai Harbour (East Bali)
The most popular and cheapest departure point. Around 10 operators run daily services, mostly departing 08:00–09:00. Direct to Gili Trawangan in approximately 1.5 hours, stopping at Gili Air (15 minutes further) before finishing at Bangsal Harbour on Lombok.

- Fare: IDR 350,000–600,000 (~$20–40 USD)
- Best for: Travelers staying in Ubud, Candidasa, or East Bali
From Sanur Harbour (South Bali)
More convenient if you\’re staying in Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta or Uluwatu — avoids the 1.5-hour drive to Padang Bai. Journey to Gili Trawangan takes approximately 2–2.5 hours.
- Journey time to Gili Trawangan: ~2–2.5 hours
- Fare: IDR 450,000–650,000 (~$28–42 USD)

Which Gili Island Should You Choose?
Gili Trawangan — The Liveliest
Gili T is the largest and most developed of the three — the one most travelers picture when they think of the Gilis. There\’s a proper night market, bars that stay open late, dive shops, and a good range of accommodation from budget to mid-range. The snorkeling directly off the beach is excellent — turtles are common at the north end of the island.
- Best for: First-timers, social travelers, divers, anyone who wants options for food and nightlife
- Avoid if: You want total quiet — Gili T has generator noise and late-night music in peak season
Gili Meno — The Quietest
Gili Meno is the smallest and most undeveloped — a handful of resorts, no real nightlife, and a pace that forces you to slow down. The snorkeling is good at the northeast corner, and the island has a tiny turtle sanctuary. It\’s genuinely quiet outside peak season.
- Best for: Couples, honeymoons, anyone who wants to completely switch off
- Avoid if: You want restaurants, nightlife, or any social scene
Gili Air — The Sweet Spot
Gili Air sits between the other two in every sense — size, development, and vibe. It has more accommodation and restaurants than Meno, but none of the party noise of Trawangan. The east coast has good snorkeling and the sunset views west toward Bali are excellent. Increasingly popular with digital nomads and longer-stay visitors.
- Best for: Travelers who want beach life without the party, longer stays, yoga/wellness
- Avoid if: You specifically want nightlife (go to Trawangan) or total isolation (go to Meno)

Practical Tips
- No motorised vehicles on any of the Gili Islands — transport is by horse cart (cidomo) or bicycle
- ATMs exist on Gili T and Gili Air but run out of cash in peak season — bring enough IDR from Bali
- Electricity can be intermittent, especially on Gili Meno — check your accommodation
- Book ahead for December–January and July–August — accommodation fills fast
- Seasickness: Bring tablets — the crossing can be rough, especially in the afternoon
