Khao Sok National Park is one of the most beautiful and underrated destinations in Thailand — ancient rainforest (older than the Amazon), dramatic limestone karst towers rising from a large lake, and a genuinely wild atmosphere. It sits in the heart of the Thai peninsula between the Andaman and Gulf coasts, accessible from Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, and Surat Thani. Most travelers drive straight past it on the way to the islands. That\’s a mistake.

How to Get to Khao Sok
Khao Sok is approximately 200 km from Phuket, 140 km from Krabi, and 100 km from Surat Thani. There\’s no direct public transport — you need to get yourself to one of these hubs and arrange onward transport.
From Phuket or Khao Lak
Minivan from Phuket Bus Terminal or Khao Lak to Khao Sok village — approximately 2.5–3.5 hours. Several operators run this route daily; book through your hotel or 12Go Asia. Cost around 300–500 THB (~$8–14 USD). Alternatively, rent a scooter or car and drive yourself — the road through the national park is beautiful.
From Surat Thani or Koh Samui
From Surat Thani, take a bus toward Takua Pa and alight at Khao Sok — approximately 1–1.5 hours, ~80 THB. From Koh Samui, take the ferry to Surat Thani then bus to Khao Sok (~3 hours total). This makes Khao Sok a natural stop between Gulf islands and Andaman coast.
From Krabi
Minivan from Krabi to Khao Sok — approximately 2.5 hours. Operators in Krabi town sell this route; book at least a day ahead.

What to Do in Khao Sok
Cheow Lan Lake (The Main Attraction)
Cheow Lan Lake is the heart of Khao Sok — a vast emerald reservoir surrounded by vertical limestone towers and thick jungle. Created by the Ratchaprapha Dam in 1982, the lake is 165 km² of flooded rainforest valley. The scenery is otherworldly — particularly at dawn, when mist rises between the karst peaks.
The main activity is a 2-day / 1-night floating raft house stay — you sleep on a traditional floating house on the lake, go kayaking, swimming, and jungle trekking. This is the must-do Khao Sok experience. Cost from ~1,800–3,500 THB per person including transport from the village, meals, and guided activities. Book through your guesthouse or directly with lake operators.
Jungle Trekking
Khao Sok\’s rainforest is one of the oldest in the world — estimated at 160 million years old, older than the Amazon. Guided treks from the village (half-day and full-day options, ~500–1,000 THB) pass through dense jungle with real wildlife: gibbons, hornbills, monitor lizards, and if very lucky, wild elephants and Malayan tapirs. The forest is genuinely impressive even on a short walk.
Night Safari
Guided night walks along the river — the best time to see nocturnal wildlife including civets, frogs, and insects. ~500 THB per person, arranged through most guesthouses.
Rafflesia Spotting
Khao Sok is one of the few places in Thailand where the Rafflesia flower (the world\’s largest flower, up to 80cm diameter) grows. Sightings are seasonal and unpredictable — guesthouses can advise if any are currently blooming.
Best Time to Visit
- December–April: Dry season — best for trekking and lake activities. Clearest skies, coolest temperatures. Peak season January–February.
- May–November: Wet season — the jungle is at its most lush and green. Waterfalls are full. Some days of heavy rain but activities still run. Wildlife activity is higher. Fewer tourists.
- Year-round: Unlike coastal destinations, Khao Sok is accessible year-round — the lake and jungle don\’t have a monsoon closure. Low season is arguably the most atmospheric time to visit.
Where to Stay
Two distinct options:
- Khao Sok village (jungle guesthouses): Budget to mid-range bungalows in the forest, 2 km from the lake road. Most have restaurants and book tours. From ~$15–50 USD per night.
- Floating raft houses on Cheow Lan Lake: Sleep on the lake itself — basic wooden platforms with fan rooms, mosquito nets, and communal dining. Usually booked as a package (transport + accommodation + meals + activities). From ~$60–120 USD per person for one night. Worth every baht.
