How to Get to Khao Lak

From Phuket Airport (Most Common)

Khao Lak is approximately 80 km north of Phuket Airport — around 1–1.5 hours by road depending on traffic. Options:

Private transfer: Most hotels and liveaboard operators offer or arrange transfers from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak. Cost ~800–1,200 THB (~$22–33 USD). The most convenient option with luggage.
Minivan transfer: Shared minivans depart from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak for ~$10–15 USD per person. Book through your hotel or at the transport desk in arrivals.
Bus: Take a local bus from Phuket Bus Terminal (south of the city) toward Takua Pa — alight at Khao Lak (~1.5 hours, ~100 THB). Cheapest but requires getting to the bus terminal first.

From Bangkok

Fly Bangkok to Phuket (~1.5 hours on AirAsia, Nok Air, or Thai Lion Air from ~$30 USD), then transfer to Khao Lak as above. Total journey approximately 3–4 hours.

From Koh Lanta or Krabi

What to Do in Khao Lak

Similan Islands (The Main Draw)

Tab Lamu Pier, 10 km south of Khao Lak town, is the main departure point for Similan Islands day trips and liveaboards. Open October 15 to May 15 only. Beaches

Khao Lak\’s beaches are long and mostly uncrowded — a stark contrast to Phuket\’s busier shores. The main beach areas from south to north:

Nang Thong Beach: Most developed stretch — restaurants, dive shops, bars, and a good range of accommodation. Best for first-timers wanting convenience.
Bang Niang Beach: Slightly quieter, good snorkeling directly offshore, popular with families.
Khuk Khak Beach: More remote, fewer facilities, quieter — good if you have your own transport.
Pakarang Beach: Coral reef close to shore, good for snorkeling at low tide. Very quiet.

Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park

The national park surrounds much of Khao Lak — waterfalls, jungle trails, and wildlife (including hornbills, monkeys, and monitor lizards) within minutes of most hotels. The Ton Chong Fa waterfall is the most popular — 1 km hike through jungle, swimming hole at the base. Entry fee ~100 THB.

Tsunami Memorial

Khao Lak was one of the areas hardest hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. A Police Boat (No. 813), swept 2 km inland by the wave, remains where it came to rest as a memorial — one of the most striking and sobering sights in southern Thailand. A museum nearby documents the disaster and recovery.

Best Time to Visit

November–April (high season): Dry, calm, Similan Islands open. Best weather for beaches and diving. Busiest December–February.
May–October (monsoon): Heavy rain possible, Similan Islands closed. Khao Lak itself is quieter and cheaper — beach is still beautiful on sunny days between showers.

Where to Stay in Khao Lak

Most accommodation clusters around Nang Thong and Bang Niang beaches. Budget guesthouses from ~$20 USD, mid-range resorts from ~$50 USD, larger beach resorts from ~$100 USD. The area is significantly cheaper than Phuket at equivalent standards.
