The Perhentian Islands are Malaysia\’s best-kept tropical secret — two islands off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia with turquoise water, white sand beaches, and some of the best snorkeling in the country. Unlike Langkawi or Penang, the Perhentians are genuinely undeveloped: no paved roads, no cars, no ATMs on the islands. Just beaches, jungle, and reef. Getting there requires effort — but that\’s part of why they stay unspoiled.

ℹ️ The Perhentian Islands are a seasonal destination. Ferry services run March to October only. Between November and February, monsoon conditions suspend or significantly reduce boat services. Do not plan a visit outside this window without checking current conditions.

How to Get to the Perhentian Islands
All boats depart from Kuala Besut Jetty — a small coastal town in Terengganu state. The speedboat crossing takes approximately 45 minutes to either island. There are four set departure times from Kuala Besut: 07:30, 09:00, 13:00, and 15:00 (with an extra 14:30 on Fridays). Return boats from the islands run at the same times.
Ferry tickets cost approximately MYR 35–70 (~$8–16 USD) one way depending on operator. You also pay an environmental fee of MYR 30 (~$7 USD) for foreign visitors plus a local council fee of MYR 5 — paid at a separate stall before boarding. Bring cash.
From Kuala Lumpur
Two options to reach Kuala Besut from KL:
- Overnight bus (recommended): Depart KL evening (~9 hours, ~MYR 50 / $12 USD), arrive Kuala Besut early morning in time for the first ferry. Take the earliest bus possible — day buses arriving after 15:00 will miss the last boat.
- Fly KL → Kota Bharu + taxi: Fly to Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) in Kota Bharu (~1 hour, AirAsia from ~MYR 80 / $18 USD), then Grab or taxi to Kuala Besut (~1 hour, ~MYR 70–90 / $16–20 USD).
From Penang
Overnight bus from Penang to Kuala Besut (~9 hours, ~MYR 50 / $12 USD). Depart early evening to arrive in time for morning ferry.
From Kota Bharu
Bus 639 from Kota Bharu bus station to Kuala Besut runs 4 times daily (07:00, 10:00, 14:00, 17:30) — ~90 minutes, MYR 6.20. Or take a Grab from ~MYR 80. Note: the 14:00 and 17:30 buses arrive after the last ferry to the islands.

What to Do
- Snorkeling: The reef around both islands is excellent — sea turtles are very commonly spotted, particularly around Kecil\’s Coral Bay and Besar\’s Teluk Dalam. Most guesthouses rent snorkel gear for ~MYR 15/day.
- Diving: The Perhentians have several dive operators — visibility is good April–September, with whale sharks occasionally spotted May–September. Prices are reasonable: Open Water course from ~MYR 800 (~$180 USD).
- Island hopping by boat: Water taxis connect beaches on both islands. A full day circuit costs around MYR 30–50 per person.
- Jungle trekking: Both islands have trails through dense rainforest — short walks with dramatic coastal views. Best done early morning before heat builds.
Practical Tips
- No ATMs on the islands — bring all the cash you need in MYR from the mainland
- Limited WiFi — most guesthouses offer basic connectivity; don\’t rely on it for work
- Alcohol: Terengganu is a conservative Muslim state — alcohol is technically restricted but sold at some beach bars on Kecil. Don\’t expect beach club vibes.
- Best months: April–September for calm seas and best snorkeling visibility
- Book accommodation ahead May–August — peak season for Malaysian and Singaporean visitors
