Khanom is one of Thailand\’s best-kept secrets — a quiet stretch of coastline in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, on the Gulf of Thailand coast between Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat city. It has long white beaches, almost no mass tourism, and one extraordinary attraction found nowhere else in Thailand: pink dolphins. This guide covers how to see them, how to get to Khanom, and why this overlooked mainland stretch is worth your time.
The Pink Dolphins: Thailand\’s Rarest Wildlife Sighting
More than 50 pink humpback dolphins (Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins) live in the waters around Laem Prathab and Ao Kwang Phao in Khanom district. These are not pink in the way flamingos are pink — they\’re technically albino or near-albino individuals whose blood vessels show through their white skin, giving them a distinctive pinkish hue. They\’re real, they\’re genuinely pink, and they\’re surprisingly easy to see here.
How to See the Pink Dolphins
Take a longtail boat from Laem Prathab pier in the morning — ideally before 08:00, when dolphins are most active as fishing boats return to shore. A longtail boat rental costs around 1,200 THB (~$33 USD) for the whole boat, accommodating up to 8 people. The chance of sighting is around 90% if you go in the morning.
- Best time: Early morning, before 08:00. Afternoon has higher chance of rain and lower dolphin activity.
- Avoid: December and January — the windy season means longtail boats often can\’t sail.
- Responsible watching: The guide should cut the engine when dolphins are spotted and not approach closer than ~50m. Some dolphins have scars from running engines — choose operators who respect this protocol.
- Combined tour: Many boats combine dolphin watching with a visit to Koh Nui (tiny island with a freshwater pond surrounded by seawater) and the Pancake Rock — a distinctive layered rock formation visible from the sea.
How to Get to Khanom
From Koh Samui (Easiest)
Khanom is directly across the Gulf from Koh Samui — approximately 30 minutes by speedboat. Several tour operators run day trips from Koh Samui that include dolphin watching, snorkeling at Koh Tan (Koh Taen), and a visit to Koh Madsum (Pig Island) — approximately 3,000–4,000 THB per person including transfers, lunch, and the boat trip. This is the most convenient option for travelers already on Samui.
From Surat Thani
By road, Khanom is approximately 50 km northeast of Don Sak (the Surat Thani ferry pier). Minivans and songthaews connect Surat Thani city and Don Sak with Khanom — approximately 1–1.5 hours. Alternatively, take a bus from Surat Thani toward Nakhon Si Thammarat and alight at the Khanom junction.
From Hat Yai or Nakhon Si Thammarat
Khanom is about 120 km north of Hat Yai and 80 km south of Nakhon Si Thammarat city. Minivans and local buses connect along the Gulf coast road — affordable but slower than going via Surat Thani. A private car or taxi is the most practical option if arriving from these directions.
Khanom\’s Beaches
Khanom\’s beaches are the antithesis of Koh Samui — long, quiet, and mostly empty. The main ones worth knowing:
- Nadan Beach (Hat Nadan): The longest beach in the area, calm water, good for swimming, a few restaurants and guesthouses nearby.
- Ao Kwang Phao: The beach closest to the dolphin-watching area. Simple seafood restaurants on the beach.
- Hat Thong Yi: Quieter, more local, south of town. Worth the 10-minute drive for solitude.
Best Time to Visit
- February–November: Best for dolphin watching — calmer seas, boats can operate.
- March–August: Gulf of Thailand off-season but Khanom\’s west-facing orientation means it can still be calm.
- December–January: Avoid for dolphin tours — windy season, boats often grounded. Can still visit for beaches.
Where to Stay in Khanom
Khanom has a limited but decent selection of small guesthouses and beach bungalows — nothing flashy, which is part of the appeal. Most accommodation is scattered along the coastal road between Nadan Beach and Ao Kwang Phao.
