Penang to Koh Lipe is one of the great classic routes of Southeast Asia travel — from one of Malaysia\’s most beloved food cities to Thailand\’s southernmost island paradise. The journey is straightforward, but the route changes with the season. In high season (October to May), you can go via Langkawi by ferry. Year-round, the overland route via Hat Yai and Pak Bara always works.

Route 1: Penang → Langkawi → Koh Lipe (High Season: Oct–May)

Ferries from Penang to Langkawi depart from Swettenham Pier (also called Georgetown Ferry Terminal) in George Town. Journey time is approximately 2.5–3 hours. Ferries run once or twice daily depending on season — book ahead in peak months. Cost around MYR 70–85 (~$15–18 USD) one way.
