Bangkok to Ayutthaya: Train, Bus and Tour Guide (2026)

Bangkok to Ayutthaya — the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Siam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 80 km north of Bangkok — is one of Thailand\’s most rewarding day trips or overnights. The train takes just 1.5 hours from Hua Lamphong. This guide covers all options and why the train is the obvious choice.

Option 1: Train Bangkok to Ayutthaya (Recommended)

Frequent trains depart from Bangkok Hua Lamphong station (or Bang Sue Grand Station) to Ayutthaya — approximately 1.5 hours, fares from ~20–60 THB (~$0.60–1.80 USD) in 3rd and 2nd class. Trains run throughout the day, roughly every 30–60 minutes. Ayutthaya station is right in the center of the historic island — rent a bicycle (~50–80 THB/hour) or take a tuk-tuk (~200 THB/hour) to explore the temples. The cheapest and most atmospheric way to arrive.

Option 2: Minibus or Minivan from Bangkok

Minibuses depart from Mo Chit (Northern Bus Terminal) or Victory Monument to Ayutthaya — approximately 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic, fares from ~60–80 THB. Faster than the train only if traffic is light (early morning). Drops at Ayutthaya bus terminal rather than the center — requires a further tuk-tuk transfer (~50 THB). Not as convenient as the train.

Option 3: Organized Day Tour from Bangkok

Organized day tours from Bangkok include transport + guided temple visits + lunch — from ~$25–50 USD per person. Some tours add a river cruise along the Chao Phraya to approach Ayutthaya by boat. Convenient and good value if you want context and a guide, though going independently by train is just as easy and much cheaper.

ℹ️ Ayutthaya\’s ruins are spread across a 2 km island — too far to walk everything comfortably. Bicycle rental (~50 THB/hour, available near the station) is the most enjoyable way to explore. Tuk-tuk tours (~300–400 THB/hour) cover more ground if you\’re short on time. Dress modestly for temple visits — shoulders and knees covered.
