Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang: Bus, Boat and Flight Guide (2026)

Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang — from northern Thailand\’s cultural capital to Laos\’ most atmospheric city — is one of Southeast Asia\’s most rewarding border crossings. You can fly in 1 hour, take an overnight bus via Chiang Rai, or combine a bus to Huay Xai with the legendary 2-day Mekong slow boat. This guide covers all three routes.

Option 1: Fly Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang (Fastest)

Lao Airlines flies direct from Chiang Mai (CNX) to Luang Prabang (LPQ) — approximately 1 hour, fares from ~$80–150 USD. One to two departures per week; check current schedule as frequency varies. Book well ahead — this route has limited capacity. From LPQ Airport, tuk-tuk to the old town (~15 minutes, ~60,000–80,000 LAK or ~$3–4 USD). Fastest option if seats are available.

Option 2: Bus via Chiang Rai + Border Crossing (Budget)

Take a minivan or bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (~3 hours, ~150–200 THB), then onward to the Thai-Lao border at Chiang Khong/Huay Xai (~3 hours, ~200 THB), cross the Mekong Friendship Bridge into Laos (~30 minutes), then bus from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang (~8–9 hours on the Laos mountain road) or the slow boat (see below). Total approximately 15–18 hours by road. A long day — break it in Chiang Rai overnight if you want a more comfortable pace.

Option 3: Bus to Huay Xai + Mekong Slow Boat (Epic)

The classic route: bus/minivan from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong (~6 hours), cross into Huay Xai, then take the 2-day Mekong slow boat to Luang Prabang stopping overnight in Pak Beng. Total approximately 3 days. Slow boat fares from ~$40–50 USD; Pak Beng accommodation ~$10–20 USD. One of Southeast Asia\’s great travel experiences — wooden boats, jungle-clad riverbanks, remote villages. Go early to get a riverside seat with a backrest.

ℹ️ Laos visa: most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Huay Xai border crossing (~$30–42 USD depending on nationality) or apply for an e-Visa online (etl.gov.la) before travelling. Have a passport photo and USD cash ready for the visa on arrival. The e-Visa is processed in 3 business days and avoids any border queue uncertainty.
