What the JR Pass Covers
The JR Pass covers unlimited travel on JR-operated trains, including most Shinkansen services (excluding Nozomi and Mizuho), JR local and rapid trains, and some JR buses and ferries (including the Miyajima ferry). It does NOT cover private railways (Hankyu, Keikyu, Kintetsu, Tobu, etc.) or non-JR subway systems.

- **Round trips plus side trips:** e.g., Tokyo-Kyoto round trip plus a Hiroshima day trip.
When It\’s NOT Worth It
- **Single city stays:** If you\’re only visiting Tokyo (using the subway/JR Yamanote loop), skip it — a Suica/Pasmo IC card is cheaper and more flexible.
- **A single Tokyo-Kyoto round trip only:** Buying two Nozomi tickets directly (~Â¥28,000) is cheaper than the 7-day pass.
- **Kansai-only trips:** Consider the regional Kansai-Hiroshima Pass or Kansai Wide Area Pass instead — cheaper for a smaller geographic scope.
