Gulf of Thailand Island Hopping: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan & Koh Tao Guide (2026)

The three main Gulf of Thailand islands — Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao — each have a distinct character and are connected by frequent ferries. Together they make one of Southeast Asia\’s most complete island-hopping routes: a big resort island, a party-and-wellness island, and a diving island, all within a short boat ride of each other. This guide covers the full route, ferry connections, and how to approach it from Malaysia.

Suggested Itineraries

7 Days (Quick)

  • Days 1–2: Koh Samui (Chaweng Beach, Big Buddha, beach clubs)
  • Days 3–4: Koh Phangan (Haad Rin, Thong Nai Pan, or wellness retreats)
  • Days 5–7: Koh Tao (dive course or snorkeling, Koh Nang Yuan day trip)

14 Days (Comfortable)

  • Days 1–4: Koh Samui — explore different beaches (Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut)
  • Days 5–7: Koh Phangan — wellness/yoga + one night at Haad Rin
  • Days 8–14: Koh Tao — PADI Open Water course (3.5 days) + explore the island

Arriving from Malaysia

  • Day 0: KL or Penang → fly to Surat Thani (URT) or Hat Yai (HDY)
  • Day 1: Surat Thani → Don Sak Pier → Koh Samui ferry (arrive afternoon)
  • Days 2–14: Island hop as above
  • Final day: Koh Tao → Chumphon → Bangkok by bus/train, or fly Samui → Bangkok

Practical Tips

  • Book ferries 3–7 days ahead in peak season (December–February) — particularly Koh Tao routes which sell out
  • Full Moon Party timing: Check the monthly dates before booking — accommodation and ferries around Full Moon are 2–3x harder to get
  • Lomprayah combo tickets cover multiple legs and are often cheaper than buying separately
  • Motorbikes: Available for rent on all three islands — essential on Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, less necessary on Koh Samui where taxis are plentiful
  • ATMs: All three islands have ATMs but Koh Tao\’s can run out of cash in peak season — bring enough THB from Samui
