Option 2: Overnight Sleeper Bus (Budget, Adventurous)
Overnight sleeper buses run from Hanoi to Luang Prabang — approximately 24 hours total, crossing the border at Nam Can/Nam Khan. Fares from ~$25–40 USD. A very long journey through mountain roads — not for the faint-hearted. The road is winding and the border crossing adds time. Best for serious budget travelers who want the overland experience and don\’t mind a full day on a bus.
Option 3: Bus to Huay Xai + Mekong Slow Boat (Epic)
Take a bus from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu or straight to the Lao border at Tay Trang/Pang Hok (~12–14 hours), cross into Laos, continue to Huay Xai, then take the legendary 2-day slow boat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang (~2 days, stops overnight in Pak Beng).
