Option 1: Express Bus KK to Semporna (Budget)
Direct express buses run from KK\’s Inanam terminal to Semporna — approximately 8–9 hours, fares from ~RM 50–70 (~$10–15 USD). Departures typically early morning and evening. A long journey through the palm oil heartland of Sabah. Comfortable enough with air-con and rest stops. If arriving overnight, book accommodation in Semporna in advance — dive operators can pick you up from the bus terminal.
Option 2: Fly KK to Tawau + Transfer to Semporna (Faster)
MASwings and AirAsia fly from Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Tawau Airport (TWU) — approximately 50 minutes, fares from ~RM 80–200 (~$17–43 USD). From Tawau Airport, minivan or taxi to Semporna town takes approximately 1.5 hours (~RM 30–50 shared, ~RM 150 private). Total approximately 3–4 hours door-to-door. A much better option if you value your time — the 8-hour bus is a long day.

ℹ️ Sipadan Island has only 120 diving permits per day issued by Sabah Parks — shared between all dive operators. Book your Sipadan dive package months in advance (6–12 months for peak season Dec–Apr). Your dive operator in Semporna will arrange everything; you don\’t go to Sipadan independently. Most divers stay at Mabul or Kapalai Islands near Semporna and day-trip to Sipadan when their permit date arrives.
